As an artist selling majority of my works online, ensuring that my paintings arrive safely to their new homes is a top priority. I ship my painting in hard cardboard tubes, this is not only efficient for space but also offers a high degree of safety for artworks during transit. I will walk you through my process of packing a painting for shipping in 5 simple steps.
Step 1: Protect the Painting Surface
I lay the materials on a clean surface and place the painting face side up on a chart paper. Then cover the painted side with glassine paper. It protects the painting from scratches.
Step 2: Avoiding movements in transit
Next I cut the edges of the paper in zig zag sections and fold it alternately around the painting and roll the layers around a tube ensuring the painted side is inward. This ensures the painting doesn't move in transit.
Step 3: Certificate of Authenticity
Next, I sign the Certificate of Authenticity
Step 4: Care and Instructions
Also, I provide a pamphlet with care and instructions for the oil painting. And carefully place the paperworks in an envelope which ships with the painting.
Step 5: Securing in mailing tube
I add silica gel packets to protect from moisture, the rolled painting along with the envelope is bubble wrapped and slid into a 5mm thick hard cardboard tube.
The ends are cushioned with packaging paper and sealed with caps on both ends. Another layer of packaging tape is wrapped around the cardboard tube for extra protection.
I usually ship the package within 2-3 days via India post, with a tracking number. Which normally takes around 14-21 days to reach the destination.
